The first step in construction is to build the barrier dike at the top of your valley. This dike will raise the water level up-valley so that it can run down a supply canal above the ponds (right). When water isn't needed , the flow is diverted into a drain canal which passes below the level of the bottom of the ponds (left). It is into this drain canal that ponds are drained at the time of harvest. Through proper management of water using supply and drain canals, a farmer can fill and drain all ponds without the use of a pump, thus relying entirely on local materials.
