"How can you be sitting there,
telling me that you care?"
-Bob Marley and the Wailers

In 1987, upon graduating from University, we decided to put convention on hold, applied to the United States Peace Corps and were offered an assignment as Fisheries Extension Agents in The Democratic Republic of the Congo (then called Zaire). With a sense of excitement and idealism we embarked on an adventure that continues to be one of the most formative experiences of our lives. Someone along the way told us that during our service "we would experience some of the best days of our lives as well as some of the worst." At the time, this advice certainly felt accurate, but it is the positive experiences which remain strongest in our memory and, in retrospect, the tough times seem humorous.
